We know that Jesus prayed that the bitter cup of death would pass from Him and that He would not have to drink it. Jesus knew what was ahead for Him. He said also, not My will but Yours Father. Your will be done. I imagine that His prayer was a little more detailed than just that.
Think for a moment if Jesus did not drink the cup, none of us would be able to spend eternity in heaven with the Holy God of the universe. “But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;” Romans 3:21-25 NASB. The key here is that ALL have sinned and fall short.
So what else was Jesus praying in the garden? Was His Heavenly Father telling Him that if He didn’t drink the cup, I would be left behind? Was God listing the names of all the people who would spend eternity away from them in the condemnation of hell? Maybe God said to His only Son, “If you don’t go. Steve & Suzanne will die. Not just them, but also Russ, Tammy, Cary, Kathy, Chris, Diane, Norma, George, Bill, Kim, Janice, Dallas, Peggy, Frank… and the list goes on. Was your name mentioned that night? Did God tell Jesus that night, if you don’t go, all of these will surely die?
Are you on that list? Does God have your name in the Book of Life? Choose today if you will accept Jesus’ free gift of salvation. Confess your sins, repent, and thank Jesus for His sacrifice on the Cross. Do it now, before it is too late. You don’t know what your last day will be.
