Where It All Started

On the morning of March 13, 2021 at 11:15, it was time for me to take the device off the back of the satellite dish.  I went out into the garage and got my trusty 6 foot step ladder.  I went to the side of the garage, set up the ladder and off I went, climbing the ladder to see exactly what I needed to disconnect from the satellite dish.  Not a big deal, the satellite dish was mounted very close to the edge of the roof. I could easily handle this under normal circumstances.  The problem was this morning wasn’t necessarily normal, the grass was a little wet, making my tennis shoes a little slippery.

With my tennis shoes tied tightly, I was ready to start climbing the ladder.  First rung, perfect.  I have climbed a ladder hundreds of times, so I didn’t think anything about it.  Second rung, spot on.  Third rung, here we go. Then it happened.

My left foot slipped.  I hadn’t gotten my foot firmly on the ladder.  Down I went, straight down, all 200 pounds of me and the ground had no forgiveness in mind.  It was as if my leg was a 200-pound pile driver. The ground didn’t give at all.  Something had to though, and it was my left leg.

As I hit the ground, a split second later, I looked at my left leg and I realized very quickly something was not right.  My foot is not supposed to be turned this way.  I realized immediately I had broken my ankle.

My First Lesson

Lessons from the Crutches by Steve Reed

Accidents Are Never Marked On The Calendar Beforehand

What I mean by this is simple, none of us expect to have an accident. We simply don’t plan on having accidents, they just happen. This is why we have things like accident insurance.

When you are involved in an accident, what is your attitude like?  Are you naturally working from a negative default or a positive default?  Do you react or do you respond in these different circumstances?

I remember Mr. Zig Ziglar saying many times over the years, the difference between reacting and responding is negative versus positive.  For instance, if you’re given a medication and your body reacts to it, this is not good.  But if your body responds, you are going in the right direction.

The same thing is true when you have an accident.  Do you react negatively, or do you respond in a positive manner?  When I fell off the ladder, my immediate response was, “That’s going to hurt”, which is a normal response.  But then I started asking the question, “God what lessons are you trying to teach me through this process?

What to Expect

Here Are A Few Excerpts From The Book

Never Take Things For Granted

Accidents can happen at any time.  Just because you travel the same route day after day and nothing changes, doesn’t mean an accident couldn’t happen.  Just because everything seems to be going well around your home and with your family, doesn’t mean things can’t happen.  I’ve heard too many stories over the years of people whose marriages are fine, so they thought.  They were going well only to find out one person was having an affair and overnight the marriage dissolved.

Are you taking your spouse or your children for granted?  Are you taking your parents for granted?  Are you taking your job for granted?  Are you taking your friends for granted?

Advisors

As a Christian for nearly 50 years, I have absolutely fallen in love with Scripture.  I read God’s Word on a daily basis.  I listen to Scripture on my phone or tablet.  I try to apply what I learn consistently.  There are certain “go to” verses which support me on a daily basis in the work I do as a Life Coach.   One of the verses is, “Without consultation plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22.

The Scripture says we need to have consultation with other people and if we don’t have proper consultation, we are going to be frustrated.  They can help us determine the plans we should follow and take action on those things.  What advisors do you have with whom you consult on a regular basis?

Stay In Balance

One of the things I talk with clients about all the time is being in balance in all areas of their life.  As a Ziglar Choose to Win coach, I teach about balance in the areas of Mental. Spiritual, Physical, Family, Financial, Career, and Personal, which are all spokes on the Wheel of Life.

When I think about the lessons I learned from the ladder, I recognize I wasn’t in balance because I lost my footing.  I lost my balance and then I fell, and I fell hard.  Think about whether you are in balance in your life in all areas.

You may be physically doing great, running five miles a day and at your ideal weight, but your family life is in trouble.

What others are saying

about Steve Reed’s coaching

I have been so blessed...

“I have been working with Steve for about a month now. I have been so blessed that I was able to connect with him in my life. He is guiding me to know what true joy is in my life. He brings me back to the basic of who I am and who I was created by. He reminds me to slow down and take care of myself and remember that God is always with me and he will walk with me through anything that comes my way. I am excited to continue my journey with him to finally feel like I am living as my true self and the life I was meant to live.”

~ Lisa K. Elementary Teacher

He helped guide them to a more positive self-image...

“I met Steve several years ago and can tell you that he is passionate about people. I have watched him work with people in an intimate and safe environment helping them to acquire a better understanding of what motivates them, how personal negative tapes they listen to have been a defeating influence in how they feel about themselves, and why they instinctively react to certain life situations the way they do. He has helped guide them into a more positive self- image and learn positive truths about who they really are.”

~ Peggy S. Executive Administrator

Stephen H. Reed – a son, husband, encourager, keynote speaker, coach, entrepreneur, writer and storyteller.

At the age of 16, I was confronted with the reality that my family heritage was of no value when spending eternity with my Savior.  It wasn’t about who my parents were; it was about a personal relationship with Jesus which mattered.  Coming to a saving knowledge of who Jesus is and what His grace and mercy meant to me, I started this Christian walk.

Much like James, Jesus’ half-brother, my faith has grown every day as I see His hands at work.  While pursuing this project and others, I have witnessed one lesson after another.

As I reflect on my life, I realize I have only begun to learn who Jesus truly is and the depth of His grace and mercy.  I am learning new lessons every day.
